A few blocks back from our airbnb lies the Gion Shirakawa area famous for not having the typical Japanese street view of tangling telephone wires. The overcast sky added a sad gloomy feeling to the willow-lined Shirakawa canal early in the morning. I remember seeing students biking to class, taxis driving and no one else other than us quietly strolling through the empty stone-paved street. To be able to resist the wave of modernization, to demonstrate how proud is one of one's tradition, to preserve the traditional experience -Kyoto, you've been teaching me way more than I thought.
