Long story short: we wanted to visit the Tokyo Imperial Palace, but somehow ended up getting lost in the huge East Garden...

Japanese students sure love running around the castles...

You don't have to pay to visit, but it will involve some bag-checking upon entrance and getting this 'ticket' which you will have to return when exiting.
